Test Procedure

The Artesia Fire Department utilizes a comprehensive testing procedure to ensure we get the best candidates. After completing the application candidates will be contacted and informed of the testing date. The process is as follows:

  1. There will be a written exam which consists of general knowledge. There is a 2.5-hour time limit Minimum passing score is 70%. If successful, the candidate will proceed to the next testing station.
  2. Prior to attempting the physical ability test phase each candidate will undergo a quick screening of the vitals (blood pressure, etc) The candidate physical ability test consists of 10 tasks: 
    • Task 1 – Dry Hose Deployment: The candidate will deploy a dry hose across a designated course. 
    • Task 2 – Charged Hose Deployment: The candidate will drag a charged 1 ¾-inch attack line over a specified distance. 
    • Task 3 Descending Hallway: The candidate will move a charged line through a series of progressively shorter barriers.
    • Task 4 – Halyard Raise: The candidate will raise a halyard using the proper technique. 
    • Task 5 – Roof Walk: The candidate will walk on a simulated roof surface. 
    • Task 6 – Roof Ventilation: The candidate will simulate the process of ventilating a roof. 
    • Task 7 – Victim Removal: The candidate will lift and drag an approximately 179-pound mannequin over a specified distance, ensuring only the feet or heels are in contact with the ground. 
    • Task 8 – Ladder Carry: The candidate will carry a ladder from one point to another. 
    • Task 9 – Stair Climb with Hose: The candidate will carry a high-rise pack up a set of stairs. 
    • Task 10 – Crawling Search: The candidate will crawl along a designated course that simulates a confined space or search environment

  3. Candidates who successfully complete the written exam and PAT will receive an interview time. Interviews will be conducted by a board of current AFD personnel of various ranks and will last approximately one hour.
