At the latest City Council meeting they opened by approving a handful of requests for public facilities. Among the requests were two from Artesia MainStreet. One for a flag ceremony on Memorial Day, and another for a children’s parade on June 14th.
Then we had more presentations from 7th graders. Katelyn Martin presented a comparison of religions. Hunter Safar discussed phlebotomy, and Urijah Luna talked about training cats. The presentations were part of an assignment they’re working on to help their research and public speaking skills. They did great, and we thank them for speaking at City Council.
Next the council gave approval to Artesia Clean and Beautiful to do a mural on city property. This will be a community mural, where people will be able to come and paint it themselves, similar to a paint by numbers picture. Supplies will be provided for those who want to paint it. The mural will be on JJ Clarke between 13th and 15th street. We’ll provide updates on this project as it begins.
Our Police Department then announced that they are rolling out their new bike patrols. Six of our officers are now certified in doing bike patrols. The new police bikes have lights and sirens and can go up to 35 miles per hour. One of the main benefits of doing bike patrol is that it’s much easier for cops to sneak up on crimes in progress on a bike than it is in a car.
Finally, the council gave approval for the rec department to adopt the NFL’s Flag Football programming. Adopting the program means that our flag football teams will use the names and logos of NFL teams. Kids will receive reversible jerseys of their team. Additionally, coaches will receive playbooks, and everyone will receive official rulebooks. This helps provide greater resources for first-time coaches as well as to the boys and girls who are new to the game.
Another piece of the programming is that similar to Little League baseball, there’s potential for teams to advance through regional tournaments all the way up to a championship tournament made up of teams from all over the country. The NFL is hosting the Flag Championships this summer at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
Thank you for reading our city council recap. We hope you join us for our next meeting May 27th at City Hall.
