For a written recap of the meeting, read below.

At City Council we got numbers from our recreation committee. Our basketball program has over 250 kids signed up this season and softball has 27 teams signed up. Our after-school program is currently serving 23 kids. The committee also said they are working on a plan for transitioning the after-school program to the new rec center when that is up and running. We’d like to thank everyone at the rec center for making all of this possible.

Next, council awarded the bid for the Legends of Artesia subdivision project. The bid was awarded to Constructors Inc. from Carlsbad. The city is closing on the property this week and work should start shortly after. The council said they are trying to approve this project in a timely manner in order to meet deadlines set by the county.

After that, the council set a public hearing next month for a zoning change. The hearing will take place at the March 24th City Council meeting. The proposal is to change the zoning of two lots near the corner of 13th and Hermosa from residential to commercial. There’s a business that’s interested in moving into that spot, but the zoning must be changed for the property before they can do that. If you have any opinions on the matter, please come to our City Council meeting on March 24th

Next the council approved a budget adjustment. Money was allocated for IT expenses as well as a contingency fund for our new housing projects.

Finally, the council discussed our elections. We’ve had over 400 votes cast so far during early voting. That’s more early votes than we got during early voting in our last mayoral election. Just over 1,500 people voted in our last election, and we’d like to beat that number this time around. Early voting will go through Saturday February 28th at city hall. We’ll be open for voting from 10am-6pm on Saturday. Election day is March 3rd; voting on election day will take place at the senior center and Faith Baptist Church

This has been your city council recap. Join us for our next city council meeting March 10th at City Hall.
