For a transcript of the video, read below.

At City Council, our police chief said that Artesia was ranked as the 5th safest city in New Mexico in a recent report from SafeWise. The chief said that the recognition speaks to the culture created by our citizens and the efforts of city leadership in supporting law enforcement.

Then the police said that they are cracking down on reckless minibike drivers. They’ve towed four minibikes away so far. The police also said they’ve seen a number of minibike crashes lately. One of the crashes was serious enough that a medical airlift was needed. We ask that anyone driving a minibike please follow the rules of the road, and parents make sure you’re talking to your kids about driving safely.

Next the council approved a reimbursement plan for housing developers. The plan allows for partial reimbursements of the cost of installing city owned utilities when building new housing developments within city limits. The developers would not be reimbursed until the building is completely finished. These kinds of programs are not uncommon for cities to offer. This program is based on a similar plan from the city of Hobbs. The goal of this program is to help attract more developers to come to Artesia and help combat our current housing shortage.

Finally, the council passed an interim budget to meet the state’s June 1st deadline for interim budgets. The council then set another special budget meeting for June 3rd to discuss the budget further before submitting the final budget ahead of the state’s July 1st deadline for final budgets. The June 3rd special budget meeting will be at 4:00 at City Hall and will be open to the public.

Please join us for our next City Council meeting June 10th at City Hall.
