The City of Artesia invites citizens to participate as members of boards and commissions.
PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION (P&Z)
The Planning and Zoning Commission reviews requests for annexation, subdivisions, and parcel replat and/or rezone based on the approved city master plan within the city limits. In addition, the Planning and Zoning Commission has planning and platting jurisdiction for all territory within three miles of the city limits.
Membership: Seven (7) members serving staggered two-year terms. Appointed by the Mayor and ratified by City Council. Members may serve multiple consecutive terms.
Meeting: Monthly - Third Wednesday, 2:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall
COMMISSION ON AGING (COA)
The Commission on Aging reviews the annual budget for the Commission on Aging (Senior Center). In addition, the Commission reviews services provided by the Center and makes recommendations for services for seniors.
Membership: Nine (9) members serving staggered two-year terms. Applicants must live within 10 miles of the intersection of 13th and Main. Appointed by the Mayor and ratified by City Council. Members may serve multiple consecutive terms.
Meeting: Monthly - 1st Wednesday of each month at 202 W Chisum
RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD
The Recreation Advisory Board reviews requests for funding from recreation organizations and submits their recommendations to the city council for funding consideration. The Board also reviews and recommends additions to or construction of recreation facilities.
Membership: Six (6) members serve staggered three-year terms. Applicants must live within 10 miles of the intersection of 13th and Main. Appointed by the Mayor and ratified by City Council. Members may serve multiple consecutive terms. A seventh member is selected from the current City Councilors.
Ex officio members include: Mayor, Recreation Director, Park Supervisor, Superintendent of Schools
Meeting: As needed. Held at 511 W Texas Ave.
LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES
The Library Board reviews the annual budget request for the Library. In addition, the board establishes policies for the administration of the Library, and recommends those policies and/or other actions regarding the administration or maintenance of the Library.
Membership: Nine (9) members serving staggered three year terms. Applicants must live within 10 miles of the intersection of 13th and Main. Appointed by the Mayor and ratified by City Council. Members may only serve two consecutive terms, and then must wait out one term before being appointed again.
Meeting: Every 2nd Wednesday at 5:15 pm. Occassional interim meetings are held.
GREATER ARTESIA ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (GAEDC)
The Greater Artesia Economic Development Corporation reviews applications for assistance for economic development projects and industrial revenue bonds, making recommendations to the city council. In addition, the board reviews the overall direction of the economic development plan.
Membership: Six (6) at-large members serving three year terms. Appointed by the Mayor and ratified by City Council. Members may serve multiple consecutive terms. Other members include the Mayor, City Clerk and Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce.

CEMETERY BOARD
The Cemetery Board recommends rules and regulations for the operation, management, care and custody of the cemetery. In addition, the board makes recommendations regarding the acceptance of any cemetery within city limits or adjacent to the city, to the City Council.
Membership: Five (5) members serving staggered two year terms. Applicants must live within 10 miles of the intersection of 13th and Main. Appointed by the Mayor and ratified by City Council. Members may serve multiple consecutive terms. The City Clerk serves ad clerk and treasurer of the board.
Meeting: Quarterly, the 2nd Monday prior to the first Council meeting.
Historical Museum Commission
To collect, preserve, and display objects and information relating to local and area history, and to make this history as accessible as possible to the visiting public.
Membership: Nine (9) members serving staggered four year terms. Applicants must live within the Artesia area. Appointed by the Mayor and ratified by City Council. Members may serve multiple consecutive terms.
Meeting: Bi-Monthly - 2nd Thursday and as needed.
